Baras started with four women sitting together over cups of
tea, talking about the things we owned grew up with.
Sarees our mothers still keep.
Pieces that were repaired,
passed down, and somehow
became older more precious with time.
And we wondered when we stopped making
things that way.
Somewhere along the way, more was made,
faster more quickly, while the hands behind
them became easier to forget.
So we decided to do things a little differently.
We work with women and makers across India,
choosing pieces made with time, skill and
care. We don’t ask them to make more.
We ask them to make well.
Things you might wear for years.
And perhaps, one day, pass on.
We’re starting small. And slowly.
